Is Sand a Good Substrate for Bearded Dragons?
You have your aquarium, your lamps, your climbing log but nothing on the bottom of the cage. Newspaper is often recommended but that doesn’t seem aesthetically pleasing so you consider sand.
One of the important bearded dragon facts you should understand is that sand is highly discouraged as a substrate. Why, you ask?
Sand sticks to everything, including the bugs you feed your beardie. Give your beardie a good soaking and, unless you dry him completely, he’ll soon be covered in sand.
Ingesting a little sand here and there is most likely not a problem, but why inconvenience your beardie with messy sand.
The best substrate, in my opinion is good old newspaper. Pile enough in there and it has a cushioning effect. There’s no chance beardie will eat newspaper unlike sand which gets in everything.
Newspaper is easy to swap out when it gets dirty and sometimes beardie likes to crawl between the sheets of newspaper to get snuggled up.
